Monday 17th November

At 5.15pm the Centre for African Studies presents Structure, Function and Text of Iregun music in Yagbaland, Kogi State, Nigeria at the Centre for African Studies, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG. Leventis Fellow Dr Titus Olusegun Stephen (Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria) presents his research on Iregun satirical music in Yagbaland. RSVP this FREE event here

Tuesday 18th November

From 8.30am to 5.00pm the Planet Earth Institute hosts #Science Africa UnConference at The Hub, 80 Haymarket, SW1Y 4TE. The morning consists of panels, debates and workshops, with the Opening address by the Right Honourable Lord Boateng in a panel discussion with Fatima Denton (UN Economics Commission), Elisabeth Lipiatou (European Commission). In the afternoon is the ‘Africa Data Challenge’  in which participants are invited to pitch for project seed funding of £7,000 for their ideas related to the emerging data revolution, judged by Beejaye Kokil (African Development Bank), Mariemme Jamme (SpotOne Global), Nick Perkins (Scidev.net) and a representative of the Intel Foundation. At 1.45pm the Black Cultural Archives presents Re-Imagine: Black Women in Britain Exhibition Tours at Black Cultural Archives, 1 Windrush Square, Brixton, SW2 1EF. At 2.00pm the African Leadership Centre presents International Mediation and the Management of Complexity in Room KO.18 Kings Building, Kings College London, Strand Campus, WC2R 2LS. Chaired by Dr Abiodun Alao, Professor Laurie Nathan (University of Pretoria) will present a paper arguing that complexity theory can provide valuable conceptual and practical insights into mediation and discusses the failure of international mediation to respond adequately to complexity. At 7.00pm is Afla Sackey and Afrik Bawantu’s Debut Album Lunch at Passing Clouds 1 Richmond Road, Dalston, E8 4AA. The Ghanaian master percussionist and singer Afla Sackey with his band Afrik Bawantu will be releasing their debut album ‘Life on the Street’. From 12.30pm to 4.30pm is Out of the Archives: A black History zine making Workshop at the National Archives, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 4DU. This workshop seeks to create a collective zine exploring the experience of black individuals in the past challenging the Windrush myth. Tickets are £5.00 from here

At 1.00pm is The Vana Trust Fundraising Harambee and Poetry Readings at 11 Romola Road, Tulse Hill, SE24 9BA. This event allows you to socialise and network while fundraising to help pool resources for projects in East Africa, guest of honour Dr Wayne Vissser will read some of his poetry and Nyasha Gwatidzo will present on in her philanthropic work. At 5.00pm is Word4Word 11th Birthday Extravaganza at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Gerry Raffles Square, E15 1BN. Celebrating their 11th year Kat Francois will host singer songwriter Michelle Escoffery, poet Oneness Sankara, drummer and storyteller Michelle Mother Hubbard, poetry collective Rhythm of Men and Pots Platform.
