Monday 10th November

At 4.00pm Chatham House presents Combating Ebola in Liberia: The role of The International Community at Chatham House, 10 St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. Karin Landgren (UN Special Representative for Liberia) will discuss Liberia’s response to the crisis and areas where the international community can most effectively target its support to assist the state in reducing the spread of the disease and preparing for the socio economic impacts. At 5.30pm the Africa Research Institute hosts How the Great War Razed East Africa in Committee 12, Houses of Parliament, SW1A 0AA. Speaker Edward Paice (Africa Research Institute), will discuss the scale and the impact of the First World War’s East African Campaign on the population of East Africa and commemorate the sacrifice and the suffering of the military and civilian participants. Reflections on public opinion in 35 African Countries in the Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, WC1H 0XG. Wednesday 12th November

At 5.30pm Chatham House presents Delivering Sustainable Growth in Africa: The Role for International Financial Centres at Chatham House. Chaired by Alex Vines (Chatham House) with Geoff Cook (Jersey Finance), Mark Pragnell (Capital Economics) and discussant Dr Iwa Salami (University of East London), this event will launch Capital Economics report Jerseys Value to Africa, examining the scope for Africa to grow economically and address the issues of corruption and illicit activity of financial centres such as Jersey. Thursday 13th November

From 8.30am to 6.30pm is the Centre for Global Health Research’s Annual General Meeting at One Birdcage Walk, SW1H 9JJ. This 2 day meeting aims to make advances in preventing and treating major health problems in lower-middle income countries and fostering the careers of a new generation of scientists, with participants from South Africa, The Gambia, Kenya, Thailand, Peru, Kenya and Uganda discussing HIV, TB, malaria, tropical diseases and other non communicable diseases. Award winning author Hannah Lowe, launches her latest book a poem cycle charting the journey of the Ormonde the first ship to carry Jamaican immigrants to the UK in 1947, with a workshop exploring how we can reconstruct personal histories through creative writing. This is private viewing of this collaboration between Mary Evans and Emeka Ogboh, focussing on the interface between sound and image to present a portrait of Lagos. Friday 14th November

From 11.00am to 5.00pm Mirror and Echoes opens at Tiwani Contemporary. This Collaboration between Mary Evans and Emeka Ogboh, focussing on the interface between sound and image to present a portrait of Lagos. Running till 20th December, this is a FREE event.

At 7.00pm Open the Gate presents Baba Adesose Wallace at SOAS Junior Common Room, Thornhaugh Street, with the legendary maser Drummer holding an African instrument workshop and then a live performance with his band Ibile. This is a FREE event

At 7.30pm Angelique Kidjo performs at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX, Beninois Grammy Award winning singer/ songwriter Angelique Kidjo will be performing from her forthcoming album Eve. Tickets start from £25.00 from here.

Saturday 15th November

At 1.00pm is London Recruits: The Secret War Against Apartheid at The Idea Store Whitechapel, 321 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BU. This event tells of activists who went to Southern Africa to support the ANC and fight Apartheid. Register for this FREE event here.

At 2.00pm is Kalango Book Launch and Signing in Room G22, LT Pearson, UCL, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT. Hosted by Dr Page Ben (UCL) Emeka Anyanwu will launch his novel Kalango, with readings and reviews by Faustina Anyanwu (C.Hub Magazine) followed by refreshments and book signings with the book on sale for £5.00. At 3.00pm is Bangles at the Platform Theatre, 260 Hornsey Road, Islington N7 7QT. this play tells the story of a British/ Nigerian poet and filmaker who is haunted by memories of her abusive, deceased father and is forced to confront the pain of her past as the second anniversary of her father’s death approaches. EFG London Jazz Festival

At 7.30pm is Abdullah Ibrahim with Ekaya and New Trio at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre. The South African pianist and composer celebrates his 80th year with township jazz from his septet Ekaya and music from a brand new trio. Tickets start from £10.00 from here.

At 8.00pm is Somi at Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal  Green Road, Shoreditch, E1 6LA. East African born, New York based vocalist Somi integrates jazz and soul with thee musical depth of her heritage and will be performing from her new album ‘The Lagos Music Salon’. Admission is £12.00 from here

At 7.00pm is Miss Congo UK 2014 Final Gala Night at The Old Town Hall, 29 Broadway, Stratford, E15 4BQ. This pageant celebrates Congolese beauty and talent. Tickets start from £15.00 from here.

Sunday 16th November

From 2.00pm to 5.00pm Mwalimu Express returns to Rich Mix. This monthly family event featuring Finn Peters, Diabel Cissokho and Kadialy Kouyate, this new trio combining the 2 koras and jazz flute will grace the live stage along with the regular kids dancing, stalls, oware and screening. At 5.00pm is the 16th Annual Gathering of Africa’s Best (GAB) Awards at the Showcase Cinemas Newham, Jenkins Lane, IG11 0AD. This Award show showcases and celebrates the best of Africa and Africans with recognition, entertainment and awards. Tickets start from £50.00 from here.
