Monday 1st December

At 4.00pm Safer Partnership presents World AIDS Day: Black Communities and HIV- Meeting the Challenge at the Karibu Centre, 7 Gresham Road, SW9 7PH. Chaired by Rebecca Brown (PPC), this event will hear from black men and women living with HIV as well as a range of professionals on the current situation and potential solutions as well as stalls and networking opportunities. At 5.15pm the Centre for African Studies presents The African Roots of the New World Banjo with Daniel Laemouahuma Jatta in Room 4429, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG. At 6.00pm Chatham House presents FGM: Building an International Response at Chatham House, 10 St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. Chaired by Sue Lloyd-Roberts CBE (BBC) with Lynne Featherstone MP (minister of State for Crime Prevention), Leyla Hussein (Daughters of Eve Project) and Dr Comfort Momoh MBE (Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust). At 3.30pm Chatham House presents Ethiopia and the Ogaden: Prospects for Peace at Chatham House. Chaired by Dr Laura Hammond (SOAS) with Tobias Hagmann (Roskilde University), Ken Menhaus (Davidson College) and respondent Mohamed Sheikh Mohamud (Freelance Researcher). This event will see the launch of Tobias Hagmann’s new book ‘Talking Peace in the Ogaden: The Search for an end to conflict in the Somali Regional State in Ethiopia’, with the speakers discussing the evolution of the conflict and the search for peace. Thursday 4th December

At 9.30am Chatham House presents One Year of Conflict: Perspectives on South Sudan at Chatham House. Chaired by Mawan Muortat (Political Commentator) with Melanie Teff (International Rescue Committee), Jehanne Henry (Human Rights Watch) and James Copnall (Journalist/ Author), this event will see the launch of the Chatham House research paper ‘South Sudan’s Slide into Conflict: Revisting the Past and Reassessing Partnerships’ and will examine the drivers of the conflict, the humanitarian implications and possible ways forward. From 9.15am to 7.00pm the Institute of Commonwealth Studies presents Nelson Mandela: Myth and Reality in the Chancellors Hall, Senate House, Malet Street, WC1E 7HU. His seminar will discuss the complexities of Mandela’s ideology, political relationship with other liberation movement within Southern African society, organised by Keith Somerville (University of Kent) and Martin Plaut (BBC World Service News).
