Proud to be African Clothing presents an extremely busy week of events and activities, from Africa Utopia, Ugandan Investment, Welcome to Busseywood, a free film festival, Africa Unplugged with Tiwa Savage and Davido and so much more.

In addition there are 3 other notable events. Ade Solanke’s exceptional play Pandora’s Box will begin its national tour on Friday 12th in Liverpool, getting to London 8th October. Get the tour dates here. 

Al Jazeera journalist Barnaby Phillips will be launching his new book 'Another Man’s War- The Story of A Burma Boy in Britain’s Forgotten African Army’ at SOAS on 16th September. With the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1 it is pertinent to remember the sacrifices of millions of Africans who served in a conflict that was not of their choosing. Following on from his excellent documentary, ‘Burma Boy’ this book covers a fascinating chapter in military history.

Author Nadia Denton will be launching ‘The Nigerian Filmmakers Guide to Success’ at the BFI Southbank on 20th of September. This book charts the new wave of Nigerian audio visual content and she will be joined at the launch by Chris Obi-Rapu (director ‘Living in Bondage’) and Dr Ladi Sandra Adamu in a weekend of quality presentations and Nollywood.  Monday 8th September

At 11.00am Chatham House presents Furthering Commitment to Africa: The US-Africa Leaders Summit in Review at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, 10 St James Square, Piccadilly SW1Y 4LE. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Geenfield (Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, US State Department) will discuss US policy and priorities in Africa and the significance of the recent US-Africa Leaders’ Summit. At 7.00pm is Let’s Talk and The ESN Takeover at Juno Bar, 134-135 Shoreditch High Street, E1 6JE. This night will be split into two halves with the Let’s Talk crowd setting questions in the first half and then the Eloquently Saying Nothing Crowd taking over in the second half, setting questions and answers. At 7.00pm The South African Film Festival screens Five Roads to Freedom: From Apartheid to the World Cup at The Vue Cinema Wood Green, 180 High Road, Hollywood Green, N22 6EJ. This documentary follows 5 individuals a former policeman, young football star, former warlord, sister of a murdered ANC fighter and wealthy lawyer all of whose individual experiences serve as an expression of their countries struggle to overcome its past. Tuesday 9th September

At 1.00pm the Black Cultural Archives presents Family Archive Fun at Black Cultural Archives, 1 Windrush Square, Brixton, SW2 1EF. This family event for children aged 3-7, teaches children about fascinating stories from within their collection, teaches children how to preserve books and design a pop up keepsake. From 6.30pm to 9.30pm Caban Capital presents Investing South African Entrepreneurs at EMW, 1st Floor, 90 Chancery Lane, WC2A 1EU. This event is for people interested in investing in South African and will feature presentations by Ben Botes (Caban Capital Plc) on ‘The role of incubator in accelerating entrepreneurship in South Africa’. Wednesday 10th September

At 7.00pm is Marcia Griffiths and Friends at The Indigo O2, The O2 Peninsula Square, SE10 0DX. The Queen of Reggae backed by the Perfect Purple Band will take you through a ska and reggae musical journey with Bob Andy, Judy Mowatt Da’Ville and Tanya Stephens on her 50th Anniversary International Tour, with UK support by Dionne Reid and DJ Fridge. Thursday 11th September

At 10.00am is Jamaica Hidden Histories: Fashion Archive Display in the Lower Café, Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, E1 6LA. This photographic and video display from the business archives of Jamaican born designer Lorna Holder who was Head of Young Fashion for high street designers Davies and Field from 1979-1986. Running till 27th September this is a FREE event.

Africa Utopia

The 3rd edition of this festival features African arts, crafts, performance, culture and music. Lots of music from jazz, classical to traditional. With markets, food markets, exhibitions and installations running alongside.

At 6.00pm is A Brief Look at Dance in Africa in the Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX. This lecture demonstration led by Funmi Adewole looks at a variety of dances across Africa using performance, percussion and film. This is a FREE event.

At 7.30pm is Qudus Onikeku and Zena Edwards: Exile Remixed in the Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall. This new work by Qudus Onikeku fuses dance, acrobatics, tai chi, hip hop and contemporary dance underpinned by his traditional Yoruba philosophy is based on his first solo piece My Exile is in my Head inspired by the prison writings of Wole Soyinka is remixed with text by poet Zena Edwards. Friday 12th September

At 7.30am is the Africa Gathering Food Hackathon in the JP Morgan Pavilion, Southbank Centre. This 3 day event features food innovators, chefs, developers, designers, data analysts, investors and entrepreneurs who come together to share ideas, collaborate and build things around food. At 9.30am is the Real Estate and Investment and Mortgage Finance in Nigeria at The Cumberland, Great Cumberland Place, W1H 7DL. At 10.00am Autograph ABP presents Black Chronicles II at Rivington Place, EC2A 3BA, this exhibition explores the Black presence in 19th and 20th century Britain through the prism of photographic studio portraiture. This FREE exhibition runs until 14th November.

At 6.30pm is the Opening Night of The Sierra Leone Photo Exhibition at The Printhouse Gallery, 18 Ashwin Street, Hackney, E8 3DL. In which East London photographer Aubrey Wade explored the ways in which people access justice with diverse judicial systems in an exhibition of colour photos. Running till 29th October, this is a FREE exhibition, more details here

At 8.00pm is Afrospot Live at The Forge Camden, 3-7 Delancey Street, Camden, NW1 7NL. Bassist Kodjovi Kush and the Afrospot All Stars will be playing highlife with a touch of reggae, jazz and traditional music. Admission is £5.00 before 9.00pm and £7.00 thereafter.

Africa Utopia

From 10.00am is Africa Calling: A Contemporary Design Showcase in the Level 2 Foyer, Royal
Festival Hall. With work by new and established designers from Africa and the diaspora, focusing on designers, artists and collaborators from Southern Africa and the UK. Running till 11.00pm on the 14th of September, this is a FREE event.

At 1.00pm is Simply Soweto Encha in Central Bar, Level 2, Royal Festival Hall, this a capella five piece group celebrates South African oral and dance traditions mixing Zulu, Xhosa and Tswana songs singing. This is a FREE event.

At 6.00pm is Pete Churchill and Osk Choir Masterclass Sharing on the Festival Terrace, featuring the Kinshasha Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste perform groove and jazz music from their collaboration with composer Pete Churchill, this is a FREE event.

At 6.00pm is Homage to Magool in the Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall. Contemporary Somali singer Farxiya Fiska will be reworking and celebrating the legacy of Somalia’s most popular singer Magool on a UK tour, singing Qaraani music solo backed by the oud this is a FREE event.

At 7.30pm is This is Not Black (Ceci n’est pas Noire) in the Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, this journey of a mixed race woman down memory lane features dance, theatre, spoken word and song by Alesandra Seutin and live music by Ayanna Witter-Johnson. Followed by a Q&A with both performers hosted by Funmi Adewole, tickets are £15.00 from here.

Saturday 13th September

From 9.30am to 7.00pm is the 4th Ugandan Investment Forum-UK at The Troxy, 490 Commercial Road, E1 0HX. Themed Uganda Open for Business it will feature the Vice President of Uganda, Chairman Pepsi Uganda, and a wide variety of Ugandan, Kenyan and European Ministers and business leaders. This event will feature plenary sessions, key note speakers, investment opportunities and networking. This is a FREE event although certain events are ticketed.

From 9.30am to 1.00pm is Day 2 of the Real Estate and Investment and Mortgage Finance in Nigeria at The Cumberland. This event seeks to create awareness and present investment opportunities for real estate and mortgage finance companies and create a niche networking platform for participants. From 10.30am to 5.30pm is the National African and Caribbean Wedding Show at Central Hall, Westminster, SW1H 9NH. At 10.30am is 4 Corners: Design from the African Diaspora at The Lyda and Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre, V&A Museum, Cromwell Road, SWW7 2RL. This talk by Jon Daniel introduces select work form the USA, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, this is a FREE event.

From 12.00pm to 5.00am Kungadred presents Welcome to Busseywood in The CLF Art Café, Bussey Building, 133 Rye Lane, Peckham, SE15 4ST. This 17 hour  African film festival will feature short films like Oya: Rise of the Superorishas (Nigeria), Ackee and Saltfish (UK),  Jonah (Nigeria) followed by a Q&A with the directors, Abyss Boys (South Africa), La Radio (Cote d’Ivoire) and full length feature films like Half of a Yellow Sun (Nigeria) , Imani (Uganda).
Live music from Asheber and the Afrikan Revolution featuring El Crisis, spoken word ffrom Tolu Agbelesi and Thale Leeto. There will also be market stalls, panel discussions, African language classes, poetry and pop art gallery. And all of this is absolutely FREE!!! Get full details and times here.

From 2.00pm to 7.00pm The East African Healthcare Forum presents Can the Diaspora Impact
Africa’s Health? From Brain Drain to Brain Gain at The Troxy. This event explores the roles that the diaspora can play collectively and individually in building the capacity of African Medical Associations, with 3 plenary sessions all followed by Q&As on The World Medical Association’s Africa Medical Initiative with Dr Margaret Mungherera, Time Banking- Tapping the Potential of African Medical Professionals in the Diaspora with Ronald Lutaaya, Telemedicine by Dr Joseph Vuni and the Kings Sierra Leone Partnership with Dr Sakib Rokadia (Kings College London). There will be facilitated workshops on Lecturing and CPD in Africa, Time Banking-Investing professional time in Africa, Medical Approach to Long term conditions and Medical approach to Infectious Diseases. At 7.00am is Day two of Africa Gathering Special Edition 2014 at The Southbank Centre, with speakers presenting their ideas and businesses. More details here.
At 10.00am is Come and Play! Africa Utopia Scratch Orchestra in The Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall, where you can bring your own instruments and try out some of the pieces the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste will be performing in concert, sign up from 10.00am, rehearsals from 10.30am, performance at 12.30am.

At 1.00pm is Voiceslab’s Kinshasa Big Sing at the Riverside Terrace. Facilitated by singer and composer Juwon Ogungbe; singers of all ages and abilities can learn a selection of Congolese songs alongside the choir of the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste. This is a FREE event.

At 2.30pm is Africa on the Catwalk in the Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall. Ola Shobowale (Infinite Beauty Factory) and Sharma-Marie Francis present a selection of works originating from or inspired by Africa’s cultural heritage, featuring Bestow Elan, Soboye, Sindiso Khumalo, AAKS, Hassan Hajjaj, Adele Dejak, Sarah Duah, Haus of Hercules and Mifani Shoes. At 5.00pm is Club Africa in The Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall where you can learn kizomba and kuduro dan styles and party to African and Afro Fusion music. This is a FREE event
At 7.30pm is Mulatu Astatke at the Royal Festival Hall, the father of Ethio jazz will play his distinctive compositions fusing funk, soul, jazz and contemporary jazz. Tickets from £20.00 from here.

At 7.30pm Gina Yashere will be performing in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, performing for one night only, after performing on US TV shows, Udderbelly and returning to Nigeria the London born Nigerian comedienne. Tickets are £15.00 from here

Sunday 14th September

At 8.00pm is Africa Unplugged at The O2 Academy Brixton, 211 Stockwell Road, Brixton, SW9 9SL. Featuring afrobeats stars Davido, Tiwa Savage and Diamond Platinumz, supported by the CEO Dancers, Afrika, D3 and Project G and hosted by DJ Abass, DJ Unbeatable and DJ Abrantee. Africa Utopia

From 10.30am to 4.00pm is the Upcycling Chair Workshop: The Art of Storytelling in The Sunley Pavilion, Royal Festival Hall. This workshop by Yinka Ilori meshes African fabric, accessories and postcards with vintage European modernist furniture, accompanied by African curated DJ sets and a Yoruba talking drum, bring your own chair and work clothes. At 1.00pm is Say it through Breakdancing in The Clore Balllroom with a group of break dancers from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya supported by Impact Dance UK, in addition to performances there will be workshops with the performers, all of which is FREE.
At 3.30pm is Day two of Africa Gathering Special Edition 2014 at The Southbank Centre, special guests include Wayne Sutton, with plenary sessions on Education in Africa, Reporting on Africa, Food Hackathon, African Leadership Decoded, How to build the next generation of African Entrepreneurs, Disruptive innovation, China loves Africa and Women and Leadership in Africa with speakers presenting their ideas and businesses.
