Another week of African events from Proud to be African Clothing, understandably in the week after South Africa completes their first election in which the post 1994 ‘born free’ generation takes part alot of events South Africa feature, with plays, poetry, panel discussions and much more

 Monday 12th May

At 6.45pm The 100 Black Men of London screen The Black Image at The Phoenix Centre, 73 Oxford Street, W1D 2EP, this short film reviews images of black people through the ages, followed by a discussion with hot food and drink for purchase at the venue. Admission is FREE

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents A New Song at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, SW1W 8AS. This play by Napo Masheane is part of the New Plays from South Africa Project after 20 years of democracy season and is about a domestic worker who persuades her sister workers to get involved in the Anti Pass Book campaign of the 1950s.  At 7.00pm Corey Harris launches ‘Jahtigui The Life and Music of Ali Farka Toure’ Biography of Music Legend at the Khalili Lecture Theatre, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG. Hosted by Dr Lucy Duran (SOAS), the blues musician will discuss the book which consists of interviews and firsthand experience from those who know him, with a live performance and a drinks reception. At 9.15pm the Soho Theatre presents Le Gateau Chocolat: Black at The Soho Theatre, 21 Dean Street, W1D 3NE an intimate and confessional portrait of Nigerian singer Le Gateau Chocolat with a repertoire from Wagner to Whitney Houston. Running till 24th May, tickets start from £10.00 from here.

 Tuesday 13th May

At 6.00pm the Royal African Society presents South Africa after the 2014 Elections in the Brunei Suite, OAS, Thornhaugh Street with Richard Dowden (Royal African Society), Desne Masie (Analyst), Xolani Xala (ANC London), the panel will examine the results of the May 7th election and assess and reflect on what 20 years of democracy means for South Africa. At 6.30pm Carpe Diem presents Poetry meets Art at Passing Clouds, 1 Richmond Road, Dalston, E8 4AA. Held in aid of Saving Congo the show will feature Bunmi Hazzan, Jah-Mir Early, Radikal Art, Beth Robb, Samantha Williams, Ma’ankha Bast. There will be stalls, food, exhibitions and a vegan banquet. Admission is £5.00 before 9.00pm £7.00 the door

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents NewFoundLand at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This play by Neil Coppen is about an anaesthetist working in a rural hospital and a dancer who meet experience a hallucinatory journey exploring race, sexuality and religion in contemporary South Africa. Tickets are £8.00 from here.

At 7.00pm is Lorna Blackmans Play ‘The Diary of the BBB’ at the West Indian Cultural Centre, 9 Clarendon Road, Hornsey, N8 0DJ. The play is about a young man struggling to be an upstanding citizen despite the negativity surrounding him, narrated in a diary format to an afrobeats backing track.  Tickets for the play and dinner are £15.00 from here.

                                                                            Wednesday 14th May

At 10.00am Chatham House presents Zimbabwe’s International Re-engagement: The Long Haul to Recovery at The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, 10 St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. Chaired by Alex Vines (Chatham House) with Dr Knox Chitiyo and Dr Steve Kibble who will discuss their new report assessing Zimbabwe’s political and economic landscape. To attend register here. 

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents Fana La Fale (Here and There) at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre This play in Setswana by Omphile Moluhse is about A young couple and tier friends start a fight against the corrupt public housing system so they can live better.

Thursday 15th May

At 2.00pm BEN Television hosts Business in the Environment at MWB Business Exchange, 88 Kingsway, Holborn, WC2B 6AA. This event seeks to address regional initiatives on waste and renewable energy business resource Tickets are £50.00 from here.

At 6.45pm is the CaribDirect International Business Network at the St Lucia High Commission, 1 Collingham Gardens, SW5 0HW. This business networking event will feature Dr Ernest Hilaire (St Lucia High Commissioner), McHale Andrew (Invest St Lucia), UKTI, Mavis Amankwah (Rich Visions), Carol Hay, (Caribbean Tourism Organisation), Fiona Compton (Paradise Prints) Admission is £15.00 from here. 

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents Brave at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This play by Mongiwekaya is about two friends out on a joint run, stopped and questioned by the police, turning the drive home into a brutal journey that changes the accused and the accusers forever. Friday 16th May

From 9.30am to 5.00pm the Global Career Company presents Talent Agenda 2014 Conference at Hilton London Canary Wharf, Marsh Wall, E14 9SH. This event brings together African business leaders and leading academics to provide an understanding of the challenges faced by businesses in finding or creating talent to operate internationally Tickets are £495.00 from here.

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents All Who Pass at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This play by Amy Jephta is set in District 6, Cape Town 1974, when the inner city neighbourhood is being cleared by the apartheid regime. In 2013 a daughter returns to exorcise the ghosts of the past. Tickets are £8.00 from here.

 At 8.45pm the Royal Court presents Performance Poetry from South Africa at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. Curated by singer and spoken word artist Leeto Thale with guest slots from Thabiso Mohare and other spoken word artists, followed by South African music and DJs till late. Saturday 17th May

 At 4.00pm the Royal Court hosts New Writing in South Africa at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This panel discussion hosted by Elyse Dodgson features Simo Majola, Mongiwekaya, Amy Jephta, Omphile Molusi, Neil Coppen and Napo Masheane. This is a FREE event but RSVP here.

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents The Last MK Fighter at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This play by Simo Majola is about an old MK soldier troubled by nightmares about his comrades left behind fighting in Angola and his struggles with his son who blames him for the years of absence. Sunday 18th May

At 11.00am is The Ethics of Liberation Wars at The Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, Holborn, WC1R 4RL. This talk by Dan Thea covers the justice of an the will to conduct wars of liberation with particular reference to the Mau Mau in Kenya, Algerian War of Independence, Angolan War of independence, the ANC war against South Africa and the secession of South Sudan from Sudan Tickets are £5.00 from here

At 7.00pm is Gangsters of Comedy at Shepherds Bush Empire, 88 Shepherds Bush Green, Shepherds Bush, W12 8TT. With the Young Guns; Kevin J, Axel, Aurie Styla versus the Old Guns; Richard Blackwood, Slim and Curtis Walker, with referee Will E Robo. Music on the night will be from Supa, Love Connexion and RB and Cylent. Tickets start from £22.50 from here.

At 7.00pm is Word4Word at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Gerry Raffles Square, Stratford, E15 1BN. Hosted by Kat Francois, featuring Same Berkson, Kareem Parkins-Brown and Folasade Philips Reggae Choir. There is also an open mic and DJ Sloety playing drops and tunes.
