At 7.00pm the Royal African Society presents Remembering Angola’s Forgotten Massacre: 27 May 1977 in the Brunei Suite, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG. Chaired by Mary Harper (BBC), Lara Pawson will discuss her new book ‘In the name of the people’ with a panel consisting of Ngola Nyunji (Angolan journalist) and Keith Sommerville (University of Kent) about a small demonstration against the MPLA in 1977 that led to the slaughter of thousands of people. At 5.30pm The Royal Anthropological Institute presents The RAI Research Seminar at the Royal Anthropological Institute. Laura Bishop John Moores University) will discuss how our early ancestors were able to exploit opportunities and confront challenges using findings from excavations East Africa. At 6.00pm Freedom Friday presents The Eritrean Film Screening at The Keyworth Centre, London South Bank University, London Road,  SE1 6LN. Screening 2 films that depict the realities of Eritreans life.  Followed by a Q&A with Meron Estefanos (Journalist) and Professor Gaim Kibreab (London South Bank University) ‘Sound of Torture’ follows Meron Estefanos as she investigates the plight of thousands of Eritrean refugees fleeing the dictatorship. ‘Siuwe Tezaribu’ is a musical that depicts the reaction of 2 parents who lost their children in the war of independence and the refugee crisis.

From 12.30pm to 6.00pm is the 2nd Nigerian Events Awards UK and Events Expo at the Hilton Docklands Riverside, 165 Rotherhithe Road, SE16 5EH. This expo will feature a series of workshops, stands and seminars from the creative, artistic, event planning and entertainment industry. The Awards Dinner will follow at 7.00pm with nominees in 19 categories, hosted by Victor Oluwole and Daizy Fini, with a champagne reception, comedy, dance, raffle draw, performances by Dele Achiever, Tosyne, and Deoba Authentic and a Buffet Dinner.  Monday 12th May

At 6.45pm The 100 Black Men of London screen The Black Image at The Phoenix Centre, 73 Oxford Street, W1D 2EP, this short film reviews images of black people through the ages, followed by a discussion with hot food and drink for purchase at the venue. Admission is FREE

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents A New Song at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, SW1W 8AS. This play by Napo Masheane is part of the New Plays from South Africa Project after 20 years of democracy season and is about a domestic worker who persuades her sister workers to get involved in the Anti Pass Book campaign of the 1950s.  At 7.00pm Corey Harris launches ‘Jahtigui The Life and Music of Ali Farka Toure’ Biography of Music Legend at the Khalili Lecture Theatre, School of Oriental and African Studies, London, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG. Hosted by Dr Lucy Duran (SOAS), the blues musician will discuss the book which consists of interviews and firsthand experience from those who know him, with a live performance and a drinks reception. At 6.00pm the Royal African Society presents South Africa after the 2014 Elections in the Brunei Suite, OAS, Thornhaugh Street with Richard Dowden (Royal African Society), Desne Masie (Analyst), Xolani Xala (ANC London), the panel will examine the results of the May 7th election and assess and reflect on what 20 years of democracy means for South Africa. This play by Neil Coppen is about an anaesthetist working in a rural hospital and a dancer who meet experience a hallucinatory journey exploring race, sexuality and religion in contemporary South Africa. At 7.00pm is Lorna Blackmans Play ‘The Diary of the BBB’ at the West Indian Cultural Centre, 9 Clarendon Road, Hornsey, N8 0DJ. The play is about a young man struggling to be an upstanding citizen despite the negativity surrounding him, narrated in a diary format to an afrobeats backing track.  Tickets for the play and dinner are £15.00 from here.

At 10.00am Chatham House presents Zimbabwe’s International Re-engagement: The Long Haul to Recovery at The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, 10 St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. Chaired by Alex Vines (Chatham House) with Dr Knox Chitiyo and Dr Steve Kibble who will discuss their new report assessing Zimbabwe’s political and economic landscape. To attend register here.

This play by Amy Jephta is set in District 6, Cape Town 1974, when the inner city neighbourhood is being cleared by the apartheid regime. Saturday 17th May

 At 4.00pm the Royal Court hosts New Writing in South Africa at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This panel discussion hosted by Elyse Dodgson features Simo Majola, Mongiwekaya, Amy Jephta, Omphile Molusi, Neil Coppen and Napo Masheane. This is a FREE event but RSVP here.

At 7.00pm the Royal Court presents The Last MK Fighter at The Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, The Royal Court Theatre. This play by Simo Majola is about an old MK soldier troubled by nightmares about his comrades left behind fighting in Angola and his struggles with his son who blames him for the years of absence. Sunday 18th May

Another short week, but packed with some of Proud to be African Clothing’s favourite events, from Markets to Comedy to Awards, Music, Fun Days, Seminars, rallies and lectures.

Two stand out events on Monday at 11.00am is #BringBackOurGirls Solidarity Rally in London at the Nigeria High Commission for Nigerians, Africans, friends of Nigeria and Africa and all right minded people should come and lend their voices in solidarity for the release for the schoolgirls kidnapped by terrorists in Northeastern Nigeria.


On Friday is TheAfrican Comedy Show, with South Africa’s Chris Forest, Nigeria’s Gandoki, Malawi’s Daliso, Somalia’s Prince Abdi, Zimbabwe’s Wayne and Kenya’s Njambi McGrath. More details below

There will be Mosaic workshops with Oemamu Mosaics, Face painting and glitter tattoo with Kemi, Massage Therapy by Mariama Ndaye as well as stalls with fashion, books, accessories, jewellery, food and much more. At 6.00pm Chatham House presents Ebola and Emerging Infectious Diseases: Measuring the Risk at Chatham House, 10 St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. At 3.00pm Chatham House presents Somali Refugees in Kenya: The Case of the Dadaab Camp at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House. Ben Rawlence (Human Rights Watch) will present the main findings of his yearlong research in Dadaab Camp, northern Kenya-the largest refugee camp in the world, highlighting the frustrations of the inhabitants with the Kenyan and Somali governments. At 6.30pm the Royal African Society hosts Wole Soyinka at 80 at The British Library, 96 Euston Road, NW1 2DB. Editor and critic Margaret Busby will be in conversation with Professor Wole Soyinka (the first African Nobel Prize Winner for Literature) discussing his work and the relationship between culture and politics. The event will also be the launch and book signing of Essays in Honour of Wole Soyinka by Ivor Agyeman-Duah and Promise Ogochukwu. Admission is £10.00 (£8.00 and £6.00 concs).

At 7.00pm is The Turning Point Movie Screening at Stratford Picture House Cinema, Salway Road, E15 1BX. This night will feature a VIP Champagne Lounge reception, after party and Directors Q&A with Niyi Towolawi. This is a celebration of three deities from Yoruba traditional worship with the music of the London Lucumi Choir, the folkloric dancing of Yolanda Perez, the contemporary styling’s of Hannah Anderson Rickets and Ffion Campbel-Davis, spoken word from Jacob V Joyce and visual art by Janine Francoise. At 4.30pm the Thurstan Shaw Memorial Committee presents The Enigma of Igbo- Ukwu at The Biffen Lecture Theatre, Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3EH. Professor Susan Keech (Rice University) will explain the richness of West Africa’s early civilization drawing on the work of Thurstan Shaw and his early excavations at Igbo-Ukwu as well as her own work on early urbanism in the inland Niger Delta in Mali. Followed by a reception at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, this is a FREE event, RSVP here.

At 6.00pm is The African Comedy Show, Hippodrome, Golders Green, NW11 7RP. This monthly event kicks off with a South, East, West line up.
