This week Proud to be African Clothing brings you another wide variety of London based events, from debates; China in Africa, How Can Mobile Phones Can Improve Development, BBM Songs of Empowerment, the I’mPOSSIBLE Conversation, GEEDA Symposium, to theatre, Talawa Firsts, The Amen Corner, to music Desert Rock, Beautiful Nubia, Malick Pathe Sow and Bao Sissoko to comedy Oh Cashaaq!, to film, Onochie.

Monday 3rd June


At 6.00pm Altonative BE: Business and Entrepreneurs Club will meet in the 5th Floor Restaurant, Waterstones, 203-206 Piccadilly. This monthly meeting is a business coaching peer support group to help those that want to progress their careers or businesses. Tickets are £5.00 bring lots of business cards!

Tuesday 4th June

At 5.30pm the Institute of Commonwealth Studies presents China in Africa? in Room 261, Senate House, Malet Street, WC1E 7HU.  Chaired by Professor Philip Murphy (ICwS) with Professor Henning Melber (Dag Hammarskjold Foundation), this is a FREE event, turn up or RSVP here.  

At 7.30pm the play The Amen Corner opens at the National Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1 9PX. Directed by Rufus Norris it stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Sister Margaret an uncompromising Pastor of a Harlem church, with Sharon D Clarke and Lucian Msamati this tale of love grief and spiritual survival is accompanied by music from the London Community Gospel Choir. At 8.00pm is the debut concert for Desert Rock at The Blues Kitchen, 111-113 Camden High Street, NW1 7JN, this old school blues band combines North African and Mandinka rhythms with earthy trancy blues, featuring Ramon Goose and band members from his recent bands with Diabel Cissoko and the West African Blues Project. DJ Jamie Renton will be playing cool pre and post gig sounds and it’s FREE! More details here.
Wednesday 5th June

Proud to be African Hoody
From 2.00pm to 4.30pm the Planet Earth Institute presents How Can mobile technology improve education in Africa? You Decide! In the House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, Westminster, SW1A 0PW. This interactive workshop explores how mobile technology can expand and improve education in Africa, chaired by Anat Bar-Gera (YooMee Africa) with Professor Tim Unwin (Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation), Dr Niall Winters London Knowledge Lab) and David Atchoarena (UNESCO). At 6.00pm BBM/ BMC hosts the BBM Songs of Empowerment and Socio-Political Awareness Quiz in the Westminster Reference Library, 35 St Martins Street, Leicester Square, WC2H 7HP, this family friendly fun session aims to raise awareness of Black British songs that do more than just entertain RSVP for this FREE event here or just turn up.  

At 7.00pm Talawa Theatre Company presents Half A Life at Talawa Studio, 53-55 East Road, N1 6AH. Part of the Talawa Firsts Series dedicated to developing and showcasing the best in new Black British writing.  Written by Rex Oban and directed by Clint Dyer this drama tells the story of Lee, Cara and Barry whose search for identity lies in family, friendship and truths from their childhoods. At 7.00pm Capital Culture Gallery hosts ‘What makes visual expression so spectacular in Africa?’  a talk by John Kenny at the Africa Centre, 38 King Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 8JT in which John discusses beauty in African communities as illustrated through the shows pictures and explains why his professional focus is within Africa’s tribal communities. Followed by a Q&A. Admission is £6.00 (free for under 16) all proceeds are donated to Survival International

Thursday 6th June

From 6.15pm to 9.15pm is the I’mPOSSIBLE Conversation at Pearson plc, 80 Strand, WC2R 0RL. This second anniversary event hosted by Angela Ferreira (Media Consultant)  will feature Avis Charles (fashion and lifestyle brand owner KiVU), Leanne Higgins (EMBF CIC and Deal with DC), Grace Ononiwu (Chief crown Prosecutor East of England), Minna Salami (Ms Afropolitan blog) and June Sarpong (TV presenter)Tickets are £25.00 with group discounts available from here.

At 7.00pm Talawa Theatre Company hosts a Q&A with David Lan at Talawa Studio, 53-55 East Road, N1 6AH. Young Vic Artistic Director David Lan presents a case study of the impact, difficulties and rewards of implementing one of the UK’s most diverse programmes. Part of the Talawa Firsts Series tickets are £6.00 from here. 

At 7.00pm Beautiful Nubia will be performing at the Africa Centre, as one of Nigeria’s foremost contemporary folk and roots musicians he will be performing vocals and acoustic guitar, this is a FREE event but book by email

Friday 7th June

From 9.30am to 1.00pm Machair Social Enterprise hosts African Diaspora Entrepreneurship: Social Enterprise in Africa at 3 Space, 58 Victoria Embankment, EC4Y 0DS.  This workshop delivered by Isebail MacKinnon (Machair Social Enterprise) will give an aspiring social entrepreneur as action plan, a clarified social enterprise idea and income stream model, an overview of the suitable legal structure options, a draft market research plan and business tools, resources and contacts. At 6.00pm BBM/BMC screens Red Tails at Flash Musicals Theatre, Methuen Road, Edgware, HA8 6EZ. The film is about the famous all African American USAAF Squadron that served in Europe in WW2 will be followed by a Q&A. Tickets are £5.00 adults and £2.00 children from here.

From 6.00pm to 10.00pm KAYD Somali Arts and Culture presents Oh! Caashaq at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, Bethnal Green, E2 6HG. This love themed night of Somali Poetry, Stories and music hosted by Prince Abdi and featuring Aar Maanta with full live band, Ali Goolyad (De Gabay Poet), Fahmi Kastello (Poet ) and an interview with Felix Cross MBE (artistic director Nitro Theatre) and Oladipo Agboluaje (playwright). At 7.00pm Talawa Theatre Company presents The New Voice of Home at Talawa Studio, 53-55 East Road, N1 6AH. Written and directed by Anthonette Isioma this play is about the Opiah family who are rich, reputable and proud but are experiencing family problems due to a generational gap. At 8.00pm Loop Collective presents Digital Africa at Rich Mix, 5-47 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, E1 6LA. Live modern West African sounds from Fofoulah launching their debut EP Bene Bop and psychedelic Moroccan gnawa flavours of Electric Jalaba with DJ Jamie Renton and Soundspecies on the decks with heavy tropical tunes. From 10.00am to 5.00pm is the GEEDA Inaugural Symposium Launch at Khalili Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG.  GEEDA (The Gender Education and Enterprise Development for Africa) aims to build an inspirational platform for the development of Africa from a gender equality perspective. Speakers include Alice Ukoko (Women Of Africa), Henrietta Miers (International Consultant), Marianne Balle Moudoumbou (Pan African Women’s Liberation Organisation) , Dr Wangui Wa Goro (Institute of Education), Vivienne Hayes (Women’s Resource Centre), Viv Ahmun (Coreplan), Nathalie Montlouis (SOAS), Patricia Lamour (Aspire Education Group), Naana Otoo Oyortey MBE (FORWARD UK), Dr  Kwadwo Osei-Nyame Jnr (SOAS), Adelaide Sosseh (United Nations Girls Education Initiative), Theo Sowa (African Women’s Development Fund) Teresa Sguazzin (Comic Relief) and Dr Titi Bankjoko (Africa Recruit). At 3.00pm the Caribbean Film Corner  presents Carnival Saturday Soup & Abir Band Launch at The Tabernacle, 35 Powis Square, Ladbroke Grove, W11 2AY.  Featuring the documentary ‘Jab! The Blue Devils of Paramin’ about the district of Paramin in Trinidad, filmed in the 2 weeks leading up to carnival, the film follows Kootoo the King Devil as he prepares with his 3 brothers to once again win the most convincing devil band competition. Also showing will be ‘Mystic Fighters’ a documentary based story on the ritual of stick fighting in Trinidad and Tobago and the power of ancestral drums . Tickets are £10.00 adults, £8.00 students and £7.00 concs from here.

From 3.30pm-5.30pm are the Senegalese musicians Malick Pathe Sow and Bao Sissoko at the Africa Centre, with Sow playing the hoddu and singing and Sissoko plays the kora, playing songs from their acclaimed album Aduna. Following the performance there will be a Q&A with the Editor of Songlines Simon Broughton. Tickets are £5.00 from here.

At 10.00pm is the Miss Caribbean UK ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ Pageant 2013 at Zanzibar Night Club, 291 Kirkdale Road, Sydenham, SE26 4QD. This is the first of the 6 part showcase featuring 6 dance and 6 beauty pageants for 6 islands, Grenada, St Lucia, Dominica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda and St Vincent and the Grenadines. This pageant involves the search for Miss Grenada. The winner will receive £1000.00, free flight to the winners island, opportunities to meet dignitaries and celebrities, TV and Radio Interviews and the opportunity to be crowned Miss Caribbean UK 2013, more information and application forms on the website. Proud to be Nigerian Hoody
Sunday 9th June

From 7.00pm to 10.00pm the Igbo Culture and Support Network hosts its June Meeting theme ‘Journey of an Igbo Man’ at Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion Street, Islington, N1 9PD, exploring the cultural rites of passage for males through boyhood to manhood and a presentation of Ethics and Values in Nigeria by Vincent Onyekwelu. Admission is £5.00.

At 7.00pm Kat Francois hosts Word4Word Slam at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Gerry Raffles Square, Stratford, E15 1BN, featuring 10 poets competing for £50.00 prize money. There will be featured acts and a limited open mic. Music and drops from Sloetry the DJ. FREE entry
